Let's not forget that the debate is whether social media marks the death of search, not explicitly SEO. While SEO is a factor in search, search is a bigger player than SEO is, both in this debate, and online reality.

Some of the tenants of SEO may be useful when getting people to find your content, but often SEO slingers' faux-scientific posturing rankles.

At the end of the day marketing, in terms of engaging and creating relationships with people online needs established skills which are often not exclusive to the internet.

Being a friendly, open, human type person works in social media, and doesn't require the semi-cryptic practises that SEO presents as necessary to achieve anything. You might not be able to quantify Social Media in the same way, but it's a different relationship with audiences. SEO is about selling, Social Media is about sharing.
